Pocket 3D Camera Calibration Service
Pocket 3D uses a one-time calibration process to establish the precise relationship between the scanner and your compatible 360° camera. Once completed, the resulting camera calibration is stored for use with your Pocket 3D workflow.
You do not need to purchase this service to use a camera with Pocket 3D. Camera calibration is designed to be performed by the user, full documentation is provided and it does not require any specialized calibration equipment. This service is simply a convenience for customers who would prefer to receive their Pocket 3D and camera already mounted, calibrated, and ready to use.
What is required to calibrate it yourself?
The primary requirement is a suitable calibration space. We recommend an indoor area with approximately a 10-foot-wide flat wall and at least 10 feet of clear working space in front of it. The wall should contain enough visible texture and detail for reliable calibration.
For spaces with plain or relatively featureless walls, we can provide (free of charge) calibration posters that add the visual features needed for the calibration procedure. No specialized targets, surveying equipment, or other calibration hardware is required.
How long does calibration take?
The field portion is straightforward and typically requires about 20 minutes of setup and scanning. After collection, allow a few additional minutes to set up and run the camera calibration process in SLAM GO POST which typically takes less than 30 minutes to process.
For many users, performing their own calibration will be the most practical option. It is also useful to know how to perform the procedure yourself if you later change cameras, camera mounting, or otherwise need to recalibrate the system.
What does our calibration service include?
For customers who simply want everything ready on arrival, Reality Systems/SlamScanner.com will:
- Mount your compatible 360° camera to the Pocket 3D
- Perform the prescribed field calibration procedure
- Process the calibration in SLAM GO POST
- Store the resulting camera calibration for use with your Pocket 3D
Your Pocket 3D and camera are then delivered to you calibrated and ready for field use.
Service price: $150, including return shipping within the contiguous U.S.
When purchased with a new Pocket 3D, the standard scanner shipping charge still applies.
If you already have your Pocket 3D and/or camera, you are responsible for shipping the required equipment to Reality Systems for calibration. Return shipping to you is included in the $150 service price.
Note: The calibration process analyzes and precisely determines the cameras lenses positions relative to the scanners node point so colorizing of point clouds and building splats is as precise as possible.
